Privacy Policy

VOICE is a messaging app. It stores the messages you send so the people you sent them to can read and hear them, and nothing beyond that. There is no tracking, no advertising, no analytics SDK, and nothing is sold.
Transcription happens on your iPhone
Every voice message is transcribed by Apple's on-device speech recognition while you are still speaking. Your audio is never uploaded to be transcribed: not to us, not to Apple, not to any third party. The transcript is produced on your device and travels with the message.
VOICE also removes filler words, fixes punctuation and resolves obvious false starts. It uses Apple's on-device language model when available. If that model is unavailable, VOICE may send only the transcript text — never the recording — through our Convex backend to OpenRouter for this cleanup. The result is checked against the original and the raw transcript remains available with the message.
What is stored
- Your account: email address, a hashed password, your display name and your @handle.
- Your messages: the recorded audio, its transcript, its waveform, and any photos or videos you attach. These are stored so your recipients can open them, and are visible to the people in that conversation.
- Conversation metadata: who is in a thread, when a message was sent, and whether it has been played.
- Notification token: an Apple push token, so a new message can reach your lock screen. It identifies a device, not a person.
Your contacts are never uploaded
If you use contact matching to find friends, VOICE reads your address book on your device and converts each email address and phone number into a one-way SHA-256 digest. Only those digests are sent, only to answer "is this person already on VOICE?", and they are not stored. The lookup itself keeps nothing. Names, numbers and addresses never leave your iPhone. You can decline the contacts permission and still add friends by @handle.
Permissions VOICE asks for
- Microphone: to record voice messages. Required.
- Speech recognition: to transcribe them on-device.
- Notifications: to tell you a message arrived. Optional.
- Contacts: for the hashed matching described above. Optional.
- Camera and photo library: only when you attach a photo or video. Optional.
Who else touches your data
VOICE's backend runs on Convex, which hosts the database and file storage as a processor on our behalf. Apple delivers push notifications. When the on-device language model is unavailable, OpenRouter processes transcript text solely to clean it up. These processors are not permitted to use your content for their own purposes. There is no advertising or analytics SDK in the app.
Deleting everything
Open the profile icon in the top right of the inbox and choose Delete account. This permanently removes your account, your handle, your friendships, every message you sent and its stored audio. It is immediate and cannot be undone. You do not have to email anyone to do this.
Children
VOICE is not directed at children under 13, and accounts are not knowingly created for them.
Changes
If this policy changes materially, the updated date above changes with it and the new version is published here before it takes effect.
